Abstract

Thioindigo dyestuffs are prepared by condensing 6-alkoxy-3-hydroxythionaphthenes with mono- or disubstituted isatins having the following general formula: <FORM:0360583/IV/1> in which a equals chlorine or methyl, b, hydrogen or chlorine, and c, hydrogen, chlorine or methyl. In examples: (1) 6-methoxy (or ethoxy)-3-hydroxythionaphthene is condensed in acetic acid or anhydride with 5 : 7-dichlorisatin: (2) 6-methoxy (or ethoxy)-3-hydroxythionaphthene is condensed with 6-chlor-7-methylisatin: (3) 6-ethoxy-3-hydroxythionaphthene is condensed with 7-chlorisatin: (4) 6-methoxy-3-hydroxythionaphthene is condensed with 5-methyl-7-chlorisatin. The dyestuffs furnish clear orange tints. 5-Methyl-7-chlorisatin is prepared from cyanoform-(2-chlor-4-methylanilide) according to the process of Specification 308,980, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the condensation of 6-alkoxy-3-hydroxythionaphthenes with any isatin having the general formula given above but in which a equals any halogen or alkyl and b and c hydrogen, halogen, or alkyl; bromine as well as chlorine being mentioned as a suitable halogen. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
