Abstract
Indigoid dyestuffs are prepared by condensing with a reactive indigoid component, a halogenated isatin a -halide obtained by treating an isatin a -halide having the formula <FORM:0422606/IV/1> wherein X is hydrogen, at least one Y is a monovalent substituent and Z is halogen, with a halogenating agent in the presence of an indifferent diluent. In examples, (1) 4 : 7-dimethylisatin is treated with phosphorus pentachloride in the presence of chlorbenzene, and the resulting a -chloride treated with sulphurylchloride and then condensed with 4-chlor-a -naphthol; (2) the same a -chloride is brominated and then condensed with 4-brom-a -naphthol; (3) 7-methylisatin-a -chloride is treated with sulphurylchloride and condensed with 4-methyl-6-chloroxythionaphthene; (4) 4-methyl-7-methoxyisatin-a -chloride is treated with sulphurylchloride and then condensed with a -naphthol. The followimg components are specified: indoxyls and oxythionaphthenes of the naphthalene, anthracene and anthraquinone series, phenols, naphthols, oxyanthracenes, oxyanthrones, oxycarbazoles, oxyacenaphthenes, oxyphenanthrenes and halogen, alkyl, alkoxy and acylamino derivatives thereof. a -Chlorides or bromides of the following isatins may be halogenated: 4-, 6-, or 7-methylisatin, 4 : 6- or 4 : 7-dimethylisatin, 4 : 6 : 7-trimethylisatin, 4-, 6-, or 7-methoxy or ethoxyisatin, 4-methoxy-7-halogenisatin, 4 : 6-, or 4 : 7-dimethoxy, or diethoxyisatin, 4 : 6 : 7-trimethoxyisatin, 4-, 6-, or 7-alkylmercaptoisatin, 4-methyl-6-ethoxy-7-ethoxyisatin and 4 : 6-dimethyl-7-methoxyisatin. The isatins may be prepared by standard methods and the dyestuffs may be finally halogenated. Halogen carriers may be used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an example in which 4-methyl-7-methoxyisatin-a -chloride is condensed with 5 : 7-dichlor-3-oxythionaphthene after chlorination with sulphurylchloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
