Abstract

Indigoid dyestuffs prepared by condensing an active a -derivative of an isatin of the benzene or naphthalene series with 1-oxy-5-alkoxy-naphthalene are treated with halogenating agents. The products may be used for dyeing cotton, wool, silk or regenerated celluloses blue to blue-green shades. In examples: (1) sulphuryl chloride is used to chlorinate, in chlorbenzene dyestuffs obtained by condensing 5-methoxy-1-oxynaphthalene with 5-chlor-7-methylisatin-a -chloride, 5 : 7-dibromisatin-a -chloride, 4 : 7-dimethyl-5-bromisatin-a -chloride, 4 - methyl - 7 - methoxyisatin - a - chloride and 4-methyl - 5 - chlor - 7 - methoxyisatin -a - chloride; (2) the dyestuff from 4 : 7-dimethyl-5-bromisatin-a -chloride and 5-methoxy-1-oxynaphthalene is treated with bromine. Examples are also given of a vat for dyeing cotton and of a printing paste. The formation of the dyestuff and its halogenation may be effected in a single stage operation.
