Abstract
Indigoid dyestuffs are prepared by condensing a 1-oxynaphthalene with a reactive a -derivative of a 4-halogen-7-alkoxyisatin which may contain a further halogen in the 5-position. In modifications, a mixture of reactive a derivatives of 4-halogen-7-alkoxyisatin and of 4 : 5-dihalogen-7-alkoxyisatin is condensed with a 1-oxynaphthalene and reactive a -derivatives of isatins obtained by halogenating 4-halogen-7-alkoxyisatin to such an extent that less than two halogens are introduced, are condensed with 1-oxynaphthalene. The resulting dyestuffs may be halogenated. In examples: (1) 4 : 5-dichlor-7-methoxyisatin-a -chloride is condensed with 4-chlor-1-oxynaphthalene or with -1-oxynaphthalene followed by chlorination with sulphurylchloride; (2) 4 - chlor - 5 - brom - 7 - methoxyisatin-a -chloride is condensed with 4-chlor (or brom)-1-oxynaphthalene and with 1-oxynaphthalene followed by bromination; (3) 4-chlor-7-methoxyisatin-a -chloride is condensed with 4-chlor-1-oxynaphthalene; (4) chlorinated-4-chlor-7-methoxyisatin chlorides, obtained by treatment of the parent isatin with sulphurylchloride in glacial acetic acid followed by conversion to the chloride with phosphorus pentachloride are condensed with 4-chlor and 4 - brom - 1 - oxynaphthalene; halogenation catalysts may be used in the halogenation step; (5) a printing paste which may contain reduction accelerators, e.g. b -oxyanthraquinone, and hydrotropic agents, e.g. sodium benzylaniline sulphonate is prepared from the mixture of dyestuffs obtained by condensing 4-chlor-1-oxynaphthalene with 4-chlor and 4 : 5-dichlor-7-methoxyisatin a -chlorides; the mixture of dyestuffs may be prepared in one step from the mixed a -chlorides, or the dyestuffs may be prepared separately and then mixed; the mixed dyestuffs may be treated with sulphuric acid and made into a printing paste. Examples are also given of a vat for dyeing cotton, wool and silk and of a printing paste. The condensation of the isatin a -derivatives with the oxynaphthalenes may be effected in the presence of alcohol, acetic acid, benzene or acetic anhydride. The dyeing of regenerated cellulose is referred to.
