Abstract

Thioindigo dyestuffs are prepared by oxidizing 4-ethyl-6-halogen-3-hydroxythionaphthene or its 2-carboxylic acid derivative or by condensing 4-ethyl-6-halogen-3-hydroxythionaphthene or a reactive 2-derivative thereof with 4-methyl-6-halogen-3-hydroxythionaphthene or a reactive-2-derivative thereof, the two components being in different states of oxidation. In examples: (1) the sodium salt of 4-ethyl-6-chlorhydroxythionaphthene-2-carboxylic acid is oxidized with sulphur in a caustic soda lye; the hydroxythionaphthene may be obtained from 2-amino-1-ethyl-5-chlorbenzene in the usual manner; (2) 4-ethyl-6-chlorhydroxythionaphthene is condensed in glacial acetic acid with 4-methyl-6-chlordiketodihydrothionaphthene - 2 - p - dimethylaminoanil. The dyestuffs containing bromine in the 6-position are mentioned; they dye cotton or wool yellowish scarlet shades. 1-Ethyl-2-amino-5-chlorbenzene is prepared by chlorinating 1 - ethyl - 2 - aminobenzene, after acetylation, by means of sodium chlorate and hydrochloric acid in glacial acetic acid and finally saponifying to remove the acetyl group.
