Abstract
334,872. Smith, W., Willimott, S. G., Thomas, J., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. March 5, 1929. Benzoylbenzoic acids; azines. - 2-Benzoylbenzoic acids are condensed with anthraquinones by means of an amino group in the one end and a halogen atom in the other, the amino group or halogen atom being in o-position to a nitro group. The products are converted into phenazines by treatment with reducing agents. In examples (1) 4<1>-chlor-3<1>-nitro-2-benzoylbenzoic acid is converted into its methyl ester by treating with methyl alcohol and sulphuric acid, and is then condensed with 1-aminoanthraquinone by heating in nitrobenzene in the presence of copper bronze and soda ash; the product, which is brown in colour, dyes wool or cellulose acetate silk. (2) the product of example 1 is reduced with sodium sulphide in alcohol; the product, which appears to be 2<1> - carbaxybenzoyl - anthraquinonephenazine, dyes wool in dark blue shades from an acid bath, and on further treatment with dehydrating agents yields a blue vat dye, presumably of the dianthraquinoneazine type, and (3) 4'-amino-3'-nitro-2- benzoylbenzoic acid methyl ester (prepared from the acid, methyl alcohol and sulphuric acid) is condensed with 1-chloranthraquinone in the presence of nitrobenzene, magnesium carbonate, sodium acetate and copper powder.
