Abstract
256,281. Thomson, R. F., Thomas, J., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1925. Alkoxy-Bz1-halogenbenzanthrones are obtained by nitrating Bz1-halogenbenzanthrones, reducing, replacing the amino group by hydroxyl, and alkylating the product. According to examples Bz1- chlorbenzanthrone is nitrated in nitrobenzene solution, reduced with zinc dust and hydrochloric acid in pyridine or aniline suspension or with aluminium and concentrated sulphuric acid; the amino compound, which yields an acetyl compound with acetic anhydride, is diazotized, boiled, and the resulting oxy compound methylated with dimethylsulphate. Isodibenzanthrone dyes are obtained by treating the above described alkoxy-Bz1-halogenbenzanthrones with alkaline condensing agents. According to an example the methoxy-Bz1-chlorbenzanthrone is heated with alcoholic potash; the product, which forms additive compounds with sulphuric acid dyes cotton from the vat in reddish-blue shades and is apparently identical with the dyestuff made by methylating the oxidation product of isodibenzanthrone.
