Abstract

551,622. Dyes. BATTY, J. W., FAIRWEATHER, D. A. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 1, 1941, Nos. 9803/41 and 7907/42. [Class 2 (iii)j Vat dyes are obtained by treating α:#-bis- (9-9<SP>1</SP>-anthronylidene)-ethane or its nuclearsubstituted halogen derivatives with a chloride or bromide of an organic carboxylic or sulphonic acid, e.g. acetyl or benzoyl chloride, or a non- cyclic anhydride of an organic carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic or benzoic anhydride, in presence of an acid or an acid-reacting substance and of an oxidising agent. The presence as oxidising agent of a nitro derivative of an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. nitrobenzene or o-, m-or pnitroluene, is advantageous. Specified acids or acid-reacting substances are sulphuric acid, oleum, chlorosulphonic acid, methyl chlorosulphonate, pyrosulphuryl chloride, sulphamic acid, sulphoacetic acid, ethanesulphonic acid, m-nitrobenzenesulphonic acid, stannic chloride, antimony pentachloride, ferric chloride and zinc chloride. In examples, (1) and (3) α:#-bis- . (9:9<SP>1</SP>-anthronylidene)-ethane or its 4:4<SP>1</SP>-dichloro derivative is added to nitrobenzene at 10-15‹C. containing sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride and the temperature is raised in 75 minutes to 120‹C., so maintained for 1 hour and allowed to fall to 20‹C., the product being then filtered off, washed and dried ; (2) α:#-bis-(9:9<SP>1</SP>-anthronylidene)-ethane is added to nitrobenzene containing sulphonic acid and benzoyl chloride and the temperature is raised slowly to 170‹C., so maintained for 1 hour and lowered to 20‹C., the product being thereupon filtered off, washed and dried.
