Abstract
The invention comprises triangulene-4,8-quinone-6,10-dicarboxylic acid and triangulene-4,8-quinone-7,11-dicarboxylic acid of the formul : <FORM:0760912/IV(b)/1> They are made by treatment with acid condensing agents of 9-phenyl-9,10-dihydroanthracene - 1,3,21,41 - tetracarboxylic and 9 - phenyl-9,10 - dihydroanthracene - 1,4,21,51 - tetracarboxylic acid, e.g. with acid condensing agents such as sulphuric acid, zinc chloride or aluminium chloride. When sulphuric acid is used, a sulphonated product which dyes wool is obtained, (see Group IV (c)). 9 - Phenyl - 9,10 - dihydroanthracene - 1,3,21,41-and 1,4,21,51-tetracarboxylic acids are obtained by reduction with zinc and aqueous alkali of the corresponding 9-phenyloxanthranol-tetracarboxylic acids. 9 - Phenyloxanthranol - 1,3,21,41 and 1,4,21,51-tetracarboxylic acids are produced from 1,3-dimethyl - 9 - m - xylyl - anthrone and 1,4-dimethyl - 9 - (p - xylyl) - anthrone by oxidation, viz. (a) by boiling with dilute nitric acid, preferably in presence of nitrobenzene, followed by boiling with alkaline permanganate solution, or (b) heating with dilute nitric acid under pressure. 1,3 - Dimethyl - 9 - m - xylyl - anthrone and 1,4 - dimethyl - 9 - (p - xylyl) - anthrone are prepared by ring-closure with acid condensing agents from 2 - carboxy - 21,41,211,411 or 21,51,211,511-tetramethyltriphenylmethanes 2 - Carboxy - 21,41,211,411 and 21,51,211,511-tetramethyltriphenylmethanes are prepared by reduction of di-m-xylyl-phthalide and di-p-xylyl-phthalide (see Specification 718,711) with zinc and alcoholic alkali.ALSO:Sulphonated derivatives of triangulene 4, 8 - quinone - 6, 10 - dicarboxylic acid and triangulene - 4, 8 - quinone - 7, 11 - dicarboxylic acid of the formulae:- <FORM:0760912/IV(b)/1> are produced by sulphonation of the unsulphonated bodies, or together with the unsulphonated bodies, by ringclosure with sulphuric acid of 9 - phenyl - 9, 10 - dihydroanthracene - 1, 3, 21, 41 or 1, 4, 21, 51 - tetracarboxylic acids. They are mordant dyes which dye wool red using Glaubers' Salt as mordant, the shade being modified to blue by chroming.
