Abstract
Sulphuretted dyes are obtained from indophenols derived from phenyl-1-naphthylamine containing a carboxyl group in the phenylnucleus by sulphurizing in the customary manner. In an example, a mixture of N-a -naphthylanthranilic acid and p-aminophenol is oxidized with sodium hypochlorite, and the leuco indophenol obtained by treatment with sodium sulphide and acidifying with hydrochloric acid; the dyestuff is prepared by refluxing the leuco indophenol with sodium polysulphide and copper p sulphate to a temperature of 117 DEG C. and then further heating with water and caustic soda; the dyestuff, which separates on passing air through the solution dyes cotton green shades. In further examples, the p-aminophenol is replaced by 2 : 6-dichlor-4-aminophenolhydrochloride or an alkyl-p-aminophenol, and the N-a -naphthylanthranilic acid by 5-amino-2-a -naphthylaminobenzoic acid, which may be prepared by condensing a -naphthylamine with 5-nitro-2-chlorbenzoic acid and reducing the nitro group.
