Abstract

279,489. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Oct. 23, 1926, [Convention date]. Samples furnished. Thioindigoid dyes are obtained by treating with a ring closing condensing agent a 3- methylbenzene 1-thioglycollic acid substituted in the 2-position by -CN, -CONH2, or -COOH, and either oxidizing the 4-methyloxythionaphthene or condensing it with a diketone or a reactive derivative thereof. According to examples (1) 3-methylbenzene-1-thioglycollic-2-carboxylic acid nitrile is heated with caustic soda solution and the resulting 3 - amino-1-thionaphthene-2-carboxylic acid converted into the oxythionaphthene by heating with dilute sulphuric acid and oxidized to the dyestuff in the usual manner; (2) 3-methylbenzene-1-thioglycollic-2-carboxylic acid is melted with caustic soda and a little water at 180-200‹ C. and the product oxidized in the usual manner. The 4 : 4<1>-dimethylthioindigo so obtained dyes cotton from the vat in red shades which are faster to light than those given by the further substituted dyestuff. 3-Methylbenzcne - 1 - thioglycollic-2-carboxylic acid nitrite is obtained from 1-methyl-2-amino- 3-nitrobenzene by substituting the cyano group for the amino group, reducing the nitro group to amino and exchanging the latter for the thioglycollic acid residue by way of the diazo compound. 3-Melthylbenzene - 1 - thioglycollic - 2-carboxylic acid is obtained from 1-methyl-2-amino-3-chlorbenzene by replacing the amino group by cyano, saponifying the latter, and exchanging the chlorine for the thioglycollic acid residue by converting to the thiophenol and condensing with chloracetic acid.
