Trinitrohydroxydiphenylamine sulphonic acid is produced by heating a solution of o-nitro-p-amidopbenol-o-sulphonic acid with dinitrochlorbenzene in presence of soda, sodium acetate, or the like, until the dinitrochlorbenzene has disappeared. The product separates upon cooling. Dyes, artificial.-The foregoing condensation product is heated with sulphur and an alkaline sulphide at about 140‹ C. until the mass can be pulverized. The dye is soluble in water, and the solution may be used directly for dyeing upon unmordanted cotton reddish-brown shades which become dark brown on treatment with copper sulphate in a bath acidified with acetic acid.
