Abstract

3083. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. Feb. 14. Dyes, artificial.-Blue to violet-blue sulphuretted dyes, which are difficultly soluble in cold and readily soluble in hot solutions of sodium sulphide to form colourless solutions, and are practically insoluble in caustic soda, are obtained by heating with sulphur an alkali salt of a p-amido-p-oxydiarylamine, such as p-amidop-oxydiphenylamine, its arylated derivatives, and the homologues and substitution products of these compounds. In examples, p-phenylamido-p<1>-oxydiphenylamine, p-amido-p<1>-oxy-m<1>-m<1>-dichlordiphenylamine, and p-xylylamid p-oxydiphenylamine are heated with caustic alkali solution until free from water, sulphur is added, and the temperature is raised. The melts are dissolved in hot sodium sulphide solution containing caustic soda. The dyes are precipitated by blowing air through the solutions. The dye derived from phenylamidooxydiphenylamine is a powder having a metallic lustre. It is almost insoluble in cold aniline, but dissolves slightly in hot aniline to a blue solution. With sulphuric acid it gives a blue solution. Hot sodium sulphide solutions of the leuco compounds become fixed on vegetable fibres. On being exposed to the air, the dyeings become blue to violet-blue.
