Abstract

Sulphuretted dyes are obtained by treating with alkali polysulphide the indophenols made by condensing nitrosophenols with diarylamines containing at least one methyl group in the o-position to the amino group and having a free p-position, but not containing a carboxyl group or more than one methyl group in each aryl nucleus; they dye cotton from a sodium sulphide bath or hydrosulphite vat in pure greenish-blue shades. According to examples aqueous or alcoholic solutions of sodium polysulphide are used and the indophenols from nitrosophenol and the following diarylamines are specified:-o-tolylphenylamine, o : o1-and o : p1-ditolylamins or a mixture thereof, and p1-chlor-o : o1-ditolylamine. Diphenylamine derivatives. - o : p1-Ditolylamine and p1-chlor-o : o1-ditolylamine are prepared by condensing, if necessary in presence of a catalyst such as finely divided copper, the sodium compound of o-toluidine-with p-chlortoluene and 2 : 5-dichlortoluene respectively.
