Abstract

New sulphur-containing products are prepared by condensing a p-arylquinone of the benzene or naphthalene series, or a halogen derivative thereof, with an o-aminoarylmercaptan or an equivalent thereof, such as an o-aminoarylthiosulphonic acid, an o : o-dinitrodiaryldisulphide, an o : o-diaminodiaryldisulphide, or the product of the action of disulphur dichloride on an aromatic amine or the transformation product of such a substance described in Specifications 17417/14 and 18292/14; alternatively a corresponding p-hydroquinone may be oxidized together with an o-aminoarylmercaptan. By treatment with sulphurizing agents, these compounds yield dyestuffs which dye particularly vegetable fibres from the vat or sulphide bath in shades fast to washing, chlorine, and light. The following examples are given:-(1) chloranil is condensed with o-aminothiophenol, or its hydrochloride or zinc salt, to form a product which dyes wool in fast reddish-brown shades from the vat; by heating with sodium polysulphide it is converted into a dyestuff dyeing cotton in dark red shades from the vat or sulphide bath; analogous compounds may be obtained from o-anilinethiosulphonic acid or o : o-diaminodiphenyldisulphide, or by oxidizing a mixture of the thio-body and hydroquinone or a chlorhydroquinone; (2) the condensation product from chloranil and the product of the action of disulphur dichloride on p-phenetidine (see Specification 17417/14) or the transformation products thereof described in Specification 18292/14 is boiled with aqueous polysulphide to give a claret vat or sulphide dyestuff for cotton; alcoholic polysulphide produces a bluer product and the addition of copper or copper compounds a redder product; (3) a violet black dyestuff for cotton is prepared by sulphurizing the condensation product from chloranil or 2 : 5- or 2 : 6-dichlorbenzoquinone and 2-amino-1-thionaphthol or an equivalent thereof; similar products are obtained from chloranil and 1-amino-2-thionaphthol or benzidine-o : o-dimercaptan (see Specification 198,077); (4) 3-chlor- or 2 : 3-dichlor-1 : 4-naphthoquinone condensed with benzidine-o : o-dimercaptan yields a claret vat-dye for wool or cotton; by treatment with polysulphide and copper salts, dyestuffs of similar shades but having greater affinity for vegetable fibres are obtained.
