Abstract

The compounds obtained by alkali fusion of p-diazines having as members an 8-sulpho-1 : 2-naphthalene ring and another ring system are treated with a sulphur halide or a material yielding a sulphur halide: the products differ in dyeing properties according to the temperature, solvent, and catalyst employed in the treatment with sulphur halide. The following examples are given:-(1) the compound obtained by caustic potash fusion of 1 : 2 : 11 : 21 - dinaphthazine-8 : 81-disulphonic acid is heated with sulphur monochloride at 80 DEG C.; the product, from a sodium sulphide bath, dyes cotton blue shades changed to fast orange by treatment with an oxidizing agent; when the sulphurizing is effected at 115 DEG C. the product dyes cotton in blue shades changed to brownish-red by the air or potassium bichromate and to a yellow-red shade by hydrogen peroxide: when the sulphur chloride acts at 115 DEG C. in presence of aluminium chloride the product dyes cotton in bordeaux shades changed to red by hydrogen peroxide: (2) the same parent material is heated with nitrobenzene, cuprous bromide, iodine, and sulphur monochloride at 140 DEG C.; part of the product dissolves in sodium sulphide solution, from which cotton is dyed in red shades, while the residue dissolves in hydrosulphite solution which then dyes cotton in tints which can be developed by means of chlorine water; (3) the same parent material is heated with nitrobenzene, cuprous iodide, and sulphur monochloride at 85-90 DEG C.; the product, from the hydrosulphite vat, dyes cotton in copper shades changed to orange by chlorine water; (4) a brown sulphide dyestuff is obtained from the compound made by alkali fusion of 8-sulpho-1 : 2-naphthophenazine by heating at 115 DEG C. with nitrobenzene and sulphur monochloride; (5) the compound made by alkali fusion of 8-sulpho-1 : 2-naphtho-31-aminophenazine is treated at ordinary temperature for one day with nitrobenzene, cuprous iodide, and sulphur monochloride; part of the product dyes cotton red-brown from a sulphide bath, while the residue dyes in black-brown shades from the hydrosulphite vat.
