Abstract

Isatin a -halides halogenated in the nucleus are obtained by treating with a halogenating agent, an isatin-a -halide having a free 5-position and at least one nuclear monovalent substituent. In examples: (1) 4-methyl-7-methoxyisatin-a -chloride prepared by treating the parent isatin in chlorbenzene, with phosphoruspentachloride, is treated directly with bromine or with sulphurylchloride; (2) 4-methyl-7-chlorisatin-a -chloride is treated with sulphurylchloride. The following isatin a -halides may also be halogenated: 4-, 6-, or 7-methylisatin a -chloride and bromide, 4 : 6 or 4 : 7-dimethylisatin a -chloride and bromide, 4 : 6 : 7-trimethylisatin a -chloride and bromide, 4-, 6-, or 7-methoxy or ethoxyisatin - a - chloride and bromide, 4 : 6- or 4 : 7-dimethoxy (or diethoxy) isatin - a - chloride and bromide, 4 : 6 : 7-tri-methoxyisatin-a -chloride an bromide, 4-, 6- or 7-alkylmercaptoisatin-a -chloride and bromide, 4 - methyl - 6 - (or 7-) ethoxyisatin-a -chloride and bromide and 4 : 6-dimethyl-7-methoxyisatin a -chloride and bromide. The parent isatins may be prepared by the customary methods, e.g. the Sandmeyer or Martinet processes. Specification 422,606 is referred to.
