Abstract

Trichlorobenzoic acids are produced by the action of nitric acid of less than 90 per cent concentration on the corresponding trichlorobenzyl or benzal chlorides or bromides. The concentration of nitric acid is preferably 60-85 per cent and the temperature at least 95 DEG C., and finely-divided inert material (e.g. fuller's earth) and catalysts (e.g. iodine) may be added. Tables are given of the conversion of mixed isomeric trichlorobenzyl and trichlorobenzal chlorides and bromides, with nitric acid of 70-90 per cent and varying conditions, to give isomeric mixtures of 2 : 3 : 6-, 2 : 3 : 4-, 2 : 3 : 5-, 2 : 4 : 5-, and 2 : 4 : 6-trichlorobenzoic acid, the 2 : 3 : 6- and 2 : 4 : 5- in major proportion. Starting materials. Trichloro - benzyl and -benzal chlorides and bromides are prepared by side-chain halogenation of trichlorotoluenes. The mono- and di-chlorination of an isomeric mixture of trichlorotoluenes are described in detail. The corresponding dibromination is effected with ultra-violet irradiation.
