1377588 Dinitroanthraquinones SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46345/72 Divided out of 1377589 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the preparation of 1,5- and 1,8-dinitroanthraquinones by reacting anthraquinone with nitric acid and sulphuric acid at a temperature of 0‹ to 50‹ C., the nitric acid being used in an amount of 3-30 times that of the anthraquinone, by weight, sulphuric acid being used in an amount less than that of the nitric acid and more than 0À5 mole per mole of anthraquinone, and recovering a mixture of said dinitroanthraquinones. It is preferred to use sulphuric acid of concentration not less than 8% and nitric acid of concentration not less than 96%. Anthraquinone may be added to the mixture of acids or H 2 SO 4 may be added to the H 2 SO 4 /anthraquinone mixture.
