Abstract

1,181,763. Di- (aminophenyl)-methane. UPJOHN CO. 1 Aug., 1968 [7 Aug., 1967; 30 Oct., 1967], No. 36785/68. Heading C2C. Di-(aminophenyl)-methane having a high content of the p,p<SP>1</SP>-isomer is obtained by condensing aniline and formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid at a temperature within the range of 0 to 60‹ C., there being at least 3 moles of water/mole of aniline, the molar ratio of aniline to formaldehyde being substantially within the range of 3 : 1 to 2 : 1 and the molar proportion of acid to aniline being not greater than 1.0, and maintaining the reaction mixture within said temperature range throughout the mixing operation and thereafter at least until the presence of > N-CH 2 -N < bonds can no longer be detected in the reaction mixture and subsequently maintaining the reaction temperature substantially within the range of 0‹ to 100‹ C. until the formation of di- (aminophenyl)-methane is complete. Examples are given which illustrate this process.
