Abstract

Phthalic anhydride is prepared by passing a mixture of air and a vaporized organic component, containing in 100 parts between 15 and 60 parts of ortho-xylene or methyl naphthalene and from between 85 and about 40 parts of naphthalene, in contact with a fluidized bed of oxidation catalyst preferably one containing a heat-hardened gel of silicone impregnated with a mixture of vanadium oxide and a potassium sulphate with or without the incorporation of minor quantities of a promoting metal oxide such as silver oxide, cerium oxide and aluminium oxide, maintained at a temperature of 325-425 DEG C., and thereafter recovering phthalic anhydride.
