Abstract
Propyl ether is separated by distillation from its mixtures with propyl alcohol by maintaining such a water content in the mixture to be distilled that the propyl ether is driven over with the water as a constant boiling minimum mixture, the ether separating from the water in the receiver. The reaction water formed during the formation of the ether by dehydration of the alcohol may be sufficient for the process. In an example, a mixture of 20 per cent propyl ether, 4 per cent water and 76 per cent unchanged propyl alcohol was obtained by passing the vapour of the alcohol at 270 DEG C. over powdered aluminium oxide, and was distilled in a column. The first distillate at 73--74 DEG C. comprises a mixture of propyl ether and water which separated in the receiver, the lower layer consisting of pure water, being continuously returned to the still. The latter was stopped when the yield of ether dropped, an azeotropic mixture of propyl alcohol and water then passing over at 87 DEG C. Pure alcohol remained in the still.ALSO:Propyl ether is separated by distillation from its mixtures with propyl alcohol by maintaining such a water content in the mixture to be distilled that the propyl ether is driven over with the water as a constant boiling minimum mixture, the ether separating from the water in the receiver.
