Abstract

<PICT:0455947/III/1> The production of pure alcohol from worts according to the process described in Specification 347,122 wherein the tail products are made to behave as head products since they form azeotropic mixtures with water in the worts and are removed with the true head products by subjecting the wort to slight evaporation in a column 3 is improved by subjecting these vapours to an exhaustion treatment in a purifier 9 so as entirely to separate the tail products which are only slightly water soluble, together with the head products and returning the purified wort to the column 3. The purifier is only slightly heated at its base; the insoluble impurities may be decanted from its lower plates at 11; alcohol vapour from its upper plates is returned to column 3 through pipe 13; and the head products or volatile impurities pass to a condenser 14. Not more than 10 per cent by volume of the wort is evaporated. In a modification, the alcohol vapour withdrawn from the purifier through pipe 13 is submitted to a supplementary purification in a small auxiliary column to remove products of medium volatility. The purified wort is then exhausted as usual in the column 4, the alcohol vapours being finally rectified in the column 19. The rectification may be replaced by other dehydrating means.
