Abstract

In the separation of isobutene from C4 hydrocarbon mixtures containing butadiene as an impurity or in amounts up to 50% by wt. by extracting the isobutene in sulphuric acid of 50-55% by wt. concentration, the production of butadiene polymers is minimized by ensuring that the final degree of absorption of isobutylene in the sulphuric acid is above a minimum value y expressed in mols. of isobutene per mol. of acid given by the expression y=mx+c in which x is the temperature and m and c are such that at 25 DEG C. y=0.1 and at 45 DEG C. y=0.4. The preferred upper limit of temperature is 45 DEG C. The process may be used to concentrate streams such as steam cracking products prior to butadiene extraction.
