Abstract

Tar is distilled using submerged combustion heating and the gas issuing from the condenser is passed through a water-cooled condenser, through a cyclone separator having a spray ring and through an irrigated packed tower to remove traces of unseparated liquid. The liquid used in the cyclone separator and the packed tower may be aqueous distillate or water to which a wetting agent has been added. The liquid products from each stage are added to the distillate. Batch or continuous operation is used.
