Abstract
Carrageenin in seaweed containing at least 28% of ester sulphate is degraded by treatment with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, an aqueous solution of the degraded carrageenin is formed and its pH adjusted to at least 7 by the addition of aqueous sodium hydroxide, and the degraded carrageenin is separated from the pH adjusted solution by the addition of acetone or isopropanol. The seaweed may be of the Chondrus, Gigartina, or Eucheuma species. Solution may be prevented during degradation by the presence of acetone. Treatment with acid may be effected at 70-75 DEG C. for 1-3 hours. The pH adjusted solution may be treated with activated carbon at 90 DEG C. and then filtered. The degraded carrageenin contains 28-32% of sulphate, has a solubility of greater than 50%, and has a viscosity of 30\sB10 centipoises at 25 DEG C.
