Abstract

Terephthalic acid containing p-toluic acid is purified by treating with an aqueous solution of a soluble calcium salt or with calcium hydroxide and separating insoluble calcium terephthalate from soluble calcium toluate, the terephthalate being treated with aqueous HCl to obtain the free acid. Preferably the crude terephthalic acid is first solubilized by dissolving in an aqueous alkaline or ammonia solution; it may be suspended in water and treated with aqueous NaOH. By acidifying the filtrate, p-toluic acid is isolated.
