Abstract

Terephthalic acid is purified by successively treating an aqueous solution of a salt of terephthalic acid with activated carbon, a reducing agent having no reducing action on the terephthalic acid, and, if desired, with further activated carbon. The treatment is conducted by dissolving terephthalic acid in aqueous ammonia, treating the solution with activated carbon and then with sodium hyposulphite, crystallizing the ammonium terephthalate, dissolving the latter in water and treating again with activated carbon. Terephthalic acid is isolated by acidifying the ammonium salt solution. The ammonium terephthalate motherliquors are used for further purifications after adding more aqueous ammonia. The purification of terephthalic acid by (a) solution in aqueous ammonia and precipitation with acid, and (b) solution in aqueous ammonia, treatment with active carbon, crystallization of the ammonium salt, solution of the latter in water and precipitation with acid, is described for purposes of comparison.
