Abstract

An alkali metal heparin aqueous salt solution is freed from pyrogens by maintaining an aqueous solution of the heparin salt of a concentration of at least 40 grams per 100 cubic centimetres at a pH within the range of 8.0 to 8.5 and a temperature within the range of 0 DEG to 5 DEG C. for a period of at least 48 hours, and then separating the solution of the heparin salt from the precipitate which forms. The heparin salt may then be isolated from the resulting solution. In the example the sodium salt of heparin is treated by the above process, a small amount of cresol being present in the solution as preservative, and the salt may be isolated from the resulting solution, e.g. by freeze drying or by precipitating the salt by adding an excess of a water-miscible liquid such as alcohol. The process may be applied to a heparin salt which has been decolorized by the process of Specification 766,992.ALSO:An aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of heparin is freed from pyrogens by maintaining the solution at a concentration of at least 40 grams of salt per 100 cubic centimetres at a pH within the range of 8.0 to 8.5 and at a temperature within the range of 0 DEG to 5 DEG C. for a period of at least 48 hours, and then separating the solution of the heparin salt from the precipitate which forms.
