Abstract
840,206. Proofing against bacteria and fungi. ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. July 29, 1958 [Aug. 16, 1957], No. 24459/58. Class 140. A process for the treatment of artificial sponges of regenerated cellulose to prevent attack by bacteria and fungi, comprises treating the sponges with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt, preferably the sodium salt, of carboxy-methyl-cellulose, and a quaternary ammonium compound in which one of the organic groups contains at least 12 carbon atoms. Among a number of suitable quaternary ammonium compounds referred to in the Specification, the following appear in examples: lauryl - triethyl - ammonium chloride, and [beta - (3,5 - diisobutyl - phenoxy) - ethoxy]- ethyl - dimethyl - benzyl - ammonium chloride monohydrate. The sponges may be treated with aqueous solutions of the carboxy-methylcellulose salt and the quaternary ammonium compound in either order, and centrifuged after each treatment. A reaction product of the two adheres to the regenerated cellulose.
