Abstract

The preparation by known methods of the following compounds, which are used to render cellulosic material resistant to the attack of micro-organisms (see Division A5), is described: (1) sodium 2-pentachlorophenoxyethyl sulphate; (2) N - (2 - pentachlorophenoxyethoxymethyl)-pyridinium chloride; (3) N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-pentachlorophenoxyacetamide (intermediate) and its sulphuric ester sodium salt; (4) the 2,4,5 - trichlorophenoxy analogues of Example (3); (5) 2 - pentachlorophenylthioethanol (intermediate) and its sulphuric ester sodium salt; (6) N - (2 - hydroxyethyl)pentachlorothiophenoxyacetamide (intermediate) and its sulphuric ester sodium salt; (7) N - (2-pentachlorothiophenoxyethoxymethyl) pyridinium chloride.ALSO:Cellulosic material is rendered resistant to the attack of microorganisms by treatment in aqueous solution with a compound of formula <FORM:1000662/A5-A6/1> wherein Hal is halogen, n is 1-4, X is 0 or S, R is a C1-6-aliphatic chain, Z is a sulphonate or quaternary ammonium group, Y is -O- when Z is sulphonate and -O-CH2- when Z is quaternary ammonium, U is H, halogen or a methyl group such that the molecule is symmetrical; the material is thereafter heated at 100-200 DEG C.
