Abstract

Mono-quaternary ammonium salts of amides of the formula <FORM:0771875/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups or together form a polymethylene chain, and which still retain the primary amino group are made by treating the diamine with a quaternating agent, for example an alkyl halide, dimethyl sulphate or the ethyl ester of p-toluenesulphonic acid. R1 and/or R2 may suitably be methyl, propyl, butyl or amyl groups or together with the nitrogen atom may form a pyrrolidine or piperidine ring. The products are used as chemical intermediates or pharmaceuticals. In an example, m-amino-(dimethylaminoacet)-anilide is treated with methyl iodide.
