Abstract
Saturated heterocyclic bases such as piperidine are reacted with alkyl chlorides containing at least eight carbon atoms, and the N-alkyl derivatives so obtained are converted into quaternary ammonium salts by reaction with an alkylating agent which introduces an alkyl radicle of not more than six carbon atoms. In an example, piperidine is heated with cetyl chloride and the product is treated with dimethyl sulphate; the cetylmethylpiperidinium methyl sulphate so obtained is useful in making aqueous emulsions of paraffin, cetyl alcohol, olive oil and like materials, and the emulsions may then be used, as such or after addition of sodium carbonate, for the treatment of fibrous materials. The emulsions are stated to be more easily absorbed by the fibrous materials than emulsions prepared with the aid of quaternary ammonium salts derived from cyclic tertiary bases of the pyridine type.
