Abstract
5 - Nitro - 2 - furfuraldehyde semicarbazone is prepared by heating an aqueous acid suspension of 5-nitro-2-furfuraldoxime with sodium nitrite solution, and treating the resulting 5-nitro-2-furfuraldehyde with a semi-carbazide salt. The nitrofurfural separates as an oil, and may be treated with the semi-carbazide after addition of alcohol to dissolve the oil and decolorization with animal black, or after separation of the oil and purification by vacuum distillation or solution in a solvent and treatment with animal charcoal.
