Abstract

A process for the production of heparin having improved clarifying activity and decreased anticoagulant activity comprises treating heparin having both clarifying and anticoagulant, activity with an N, N1 - di - a - alkyl - benzyl ethylenediamine derivative e.g. N, N1-di-a -methyl-benzylethylenediamine, N, N1 - di - a - ethylbenzylethylenediamine, N, N1 - di - a - propylbenzylethylenediamine, separating the water-soluble salt from the water-insoluble salt and liberating the heparin from the water-soluble salt. Heparin may be precipitated from an aqueous solution of the water-soluble salt by addition of a suitable acid e.g. acetic acid, or the solution may be treated with a base e.g. benzidine, the precipitate separated and hydrolysed with caustic soda to precipitate the base prior to precipitating the heparin from the separated mother liquor by addition of an acid e.g. acetic acid.
