Abstract

A process for the purification of crude caprolactam, obtained by the nitrosation of cyclohexyl compounds containing a tertiary carbon atom such as hexahydrobenzoic acid or its functional derivatives, comprises dissolving the caprolactam in water, followed by at least one alkaline treatment of the crude caprolactam solution, distillation of the product obtained after evaporation of the water, a reduction of the distilled product, and a final oxidation of an aqueous solution of the reduced product. In one embodiment, the process further comprises an alkaline treatment of the oxidised solution and a subsequent distillation of the product obtained after evaporation of the water. In a second embodiment, the process comprises a basic treatment of the crude caprolactam solution followed by distillation of the product obtained after evaporation of the water, a reduction of the distilled product, a basic treatment of the reduced product and, finally, oxidation of the latter. Intermediate filtration steps may additionally be performed. Examples are given. Specifications 904,302, 904,413 and 912,034 are referred to.
