Abstract

The wet-process phosphoric acid is extracted with an organic solvent which is capable of extracting phosphoric acid, and which is partially miscible with H2O, but contains not more than 40-50% of the H2O required to saturate it. Suitable solvents are those which contain 2-30 wt.% of H2O at 25 degrees C. when saturated e.g. 4-10C aliphatic alcohols, cyclopentanol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl acetate, tributyl phosphate. The phosphoric may be sepd. form the organic solvent by re-extraction with H2O, in which case the solvent is distilled before recycling to remove some of its H2O or by neutralisation with NaOH, CA2CO3, KOH, K2CO3 or NH3. In this case the recovered organic solvent may be recycled without further treatment. High yields are obtained, even from dil. phosphoric acid soln., and the product is suitable for use in the food and detergent industries.
