Abstract

1357614 Purification of phosphoric acid AZOTE ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES SA 8 June 1971 [12 June 1970 10 March 1971] 19515/71 Heading C1A "Wet process" phosphoric acid is purified by extraction (preferably counter-current) with a partially water-miscible organic solvent, (i.e. that contains 2-30% water in the saturated state) which solvent contains 40-50% less water than the saturation value. The organic phase, containing the major part of the phosphoric acid is subsequently treated with water to recover the phosphoric acid, or is partially neutralized with an alkaline sodium, potassium or ammonium compound, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 or NH 4 OH, after which the aqueous phase containing the phosphate salt is separated by decantation. The ratio of the initial extractant : "wet process" phosphoric acid and the decantation temperature are preferably controlled so that the water content of the final organic phase after decantation is such that the phase may be fed directly back to the extraction process. Specified solvents are C 4-10 alcohols, e.g. isobutanol, tamyl alcohol, cyclopentanol, cyclohexanol, benzyl and 2-phenylethyl alcohols; cyclohexanone, and esters, e.g. ethyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, tri-butyl phosphate.
