Abstract
Crude hecogenin is recovered from the juice of agave leaves in which recovery process the juice is submitted to acidic hydrolysis under pressure and at a temperature exceeding 100 DEG C. and the precipitate that forms containing the crude hecogenin is separated and treated with an aqueous alkali solution. The reaction mixture may not contain any added acid or may contain up to 10% by weight of added acid, for example sulphuric acid. The treatment with an aqueous alkali may be preceeded by an extraction of the product of hydrolysis with an alcoholic acid solution and the hecogenin is recovered from the resulting extract with the aqueous alkali solution. The acid used in the above process may be sulphuric acid. The hydrolysis step may be effected continuously by passing the reaction mixture through a reaction vessel in which the temperature is maintained at at least 150 DEG C.
