Abstract

In the manufacture of aqueous alkali hydroxide solutions by the reaction of an alkali metal carbonate with lime in the presence of water, a liquor free from iron and aluminium is obtained by adding a purifying reagent, selected from the group consisting of the oxides, hydroxides and water soluble salts of magnesium, barium or strontium, to the liquor prior to the separation of the precipitated calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate sludge produced is thereafter separated from the caustic liquor. The reagent may be added to the lime, to the sodium carbonate or sodium carbonate liquor, to the reaction vessel during the reaction or to the reaction vessel after the reaction, but prior to the separation of the sludge. The process may be effected by using a lime produced by calcining dolomitic limestone or a mixture of lime with dolomitic lime. A magnesium compound may be supplied in solution, in suspension or in solid form. Aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxides may be produced by the process. Specification 178,896, [Class 1 (ii)], is referred to.
