Abstract

Mg(OH)2 is prepd. by (a) mixing sea water with alkali in excess of amt. required to ppte. Mg ion in the seawater as Mg(OH)2 in the presence of seed crystals of Mg(OH)2, (b) separating seawater from the suspension leaving a thickened slurry contg. 25-300 g/l Mg(OH)2, (c) treating the thickened slurry with seawater contg. Mg ions capable of reacting with the residual alkali in the slurry and (d) recovering Mg(OH)2. Ca and B impurities in the Mg(OH)2 are minimised, e.g. Mg(OH)2 prepd. contained 1.7 wt % CaO, 0.11 wt % B, three conventionally prepd. Mg(OH)2 samples contained 2.5, 2.0 1.5 wt % CaO, 0.1, 0.25, 0.3 wt % B respectively.
