Abstract

1502422 Magnesium hydroxide STEETLEY MINERALS Ltd 6 March 1975 [7 March 1974] 10339/74 Heading C1A Magnesium hydroxide is prepared by mixing sea water with alkali in the presence of seed crystals of magnesium hydroxide; the alkali is added in excess and the sea water is separated off from the precipitate to give a thickened slurry containing from 25 to 300 grams of magnesium hydroxide per litre of the slurry; this slurry is then treated with an amount of sea water containing sufficient magnesium ions to react with the excess alkali. Preferably the sea water is mixed with the alkali so that the magnesium hydroxide is precipitated at a pH greater than at equivalence. The seed crystals may be obtained from (i) the suspension of hydroxide formed on reacting the alkali with the sea water, (ii) from the hydroxide slurry obtained by separating off the sea water from the suspension or (iii) from the final magnesium hydroxide product. These seed crystals are preferably present in an amount of from 10 to 35 times the weight of the magnesium hydroxide precipitated. The magnesium hydroxide product may be subsequently treated to obtain caustic magnesia and dead burnt magnesia.
