Abstract
1444241 Treating sea water H TABATA and N TABATA 3 Aug 1973 [8 Aug 1972] 36909/73 Heading C1C A process for the pre-treatment of sea water as a preliminary stage in the evaporation thereof to produce fresh water and brine, in which a magnesium carbonate slurry, in which the molar ratio of CO 2 to MgO in the magnesium carbonate is from 0À3 : 1 to 1À2 : 1, is added to the sea water in such an amount that the molar ratio of calcium dissolved in the sea water to CO 2 in the slurry is between 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 so as to precipitate from 90 to 99% by weight of the calcium dissolved in the sea water in the form of calcium carbonate, the reaction being effected at a temperature of from 50‹ to 65‹ C.
