Abstract
1434608 Preparation of MgO ENTE MINERARIO SICILIANO (EMS) ENTE DI DIRITTO PUBBLICO 15 June 1973 [27 June 1972] 28537/73 Heading C1A MgO is prepared from solutions (particularly sea-water and Mg plant effluents) by precipitating MgCO 3 /Mg(OH) 2 with a solution containing NH 3 and CO 2 substantially corresponding to (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 , filtering and calcining. The ammonia is recovered from the mother-liquor, carbonated and re-cycled. The precipitation may be carried out at 10-85 C. using 100- 120% of the stoichiometric weight of (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 . The starting solution may be diluted 1 : 1 to 1 : 2. Effluent from a plant producing K 2 SO 4 from kainite is exemplified.
