Abstract
1,145,043. Sulphur. SOC. NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE. 13 April, 1966 [13 April, 1965], No. 16198/66. Heading C1A. In the production of sulphur by reacting SO 2 with H 2 S in an aqueous medium, the temperature of the medium is maintained at 45-65‹ C. and its pH at a value of at least 6 but less than 7. The liquid medium may subsequently be re-used and is preferably treated with a neutralizing agent, e.g. lime or calcium carbonate, after the separation of sulphur therefrom and before recycling. The aqueous medium may contain mono- and/or bi-valent electrolytes (e.g. NaCI, KCl, LiCl, NH 4 Cl, MgSO 4 ), and preferably comprises sea water. The SO 2 and H 2 S may be introduced into the aqueous medium separately or in admixture. The medium should be agitated. In comparative examples, the aqueous medium has a pH of 6-7 with temperatures of ambient, 30‹, 40‹, 75‹, 80‹ and 90‹ C.
