Abstract

A solution of, or solid polybutadiene with predominantly cis-1,4-linkages, which has been produced by solution polymerizing butadiene with an organolithium compound or organometallic mixed catalyst (defined), is submitted to a heat treament at a temperature of between 100 DEG and 220 DEG C., while the Mooney viscosity remains substantially unchanged. Where solid polybutadiene is treated, this may be effected by heating lumps, strips or films in a furnace or during the process of drying moist lumps while being subjected to mechanical stress, e.g. in a screw press. A composition comprising the heat-treated polybutadiene, natural rubber and conventional vulcanizing ingredients is also disclosed.
