Abstract
The chloride content of coal tar is reduced by contacting the tar with an aqueous solution of an inorganic alkali, preferably NaOH, and removing the aqueous layer, e.g. by centrifuging. The mixture is left to settle for several days during which the temperature is maintained at 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. Ammonia may be used as the alkali. Specific examples are described in which the tar was from East Midlands coal carbonized in vertical retorts at 700 DEG to 730 DEG C. The alkali added amounts to up to one and half times the stoichiometric equivalent of the chloride ion present in the tar.
