Abstract

Carbon bisulphide is made by contacting sulphur vapour at a temperature exceeding 550 DEG C. with carbon produced by the process of Specification 638,700 in which carbon, produced by carbonization of solid carbonaceous materials, is subjected to the action of sulphur vapour between 450 DEG and 550 DEG C. The activated carbon may be delivered from its source of production to a carbon bisulphide retort through a hopper through which sulphur vapour is being passed, or the carbon may be activated in a container adjacent the retort and be delivered directly thereto or it may be activated in the retort prior to carbon bisulphide production.
