Abstract
Sulphur-containing modified carbon black is obtained by heating carbon black to a temperature of 150 DEG C. to 350 DEG C. with liquid sulphur, sulphur dissolved in a solvent, or a substance which gives up sulphur to the carbon black at the reaction temperature, such as polysulphides carbon disulphide or organic sulphur compounds. The quantity of sulphur employed is preferably such as to leave no excess after treatment excess may, however, be removed by heating vacuo or in nitrogen. The process is preferably effected in a rotary tube or mixing worm, temperature of 300-350 DEG C. preferably being employed with liquid sulphur or substances yielding it, and 150-200 DEG C. when sulphur dissolved in a solvent such as carbon disulphide is used. Up to 7 per cent. of sulphur may be incorporated in thermal blacks and up to 3 per cent. in heavy lamp blacks.
