Abstract

A moulding-composition prepared from pitch or tar is obtained by treating the pitch or tar at elevated temperature with concentrated sulphuric or selenic acid or a mixture thereof or with a mixture of sulphuric or selenic acid and selenium dioxide. Preferably an oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide is also present. The pitch or tar is dissolved or dispersed in an organic liquid inert to the acid, e.g. solvent naphtha or a hydrogenated aromatic hydrocarbon. A polymerized or condensed product results from the reaction and precipitation in a granular form is faciltated by the addition of a finely divided carbonaceous material, such as carbon black. The precipitate is separated as carbon black. The precipitate is separated from the liquid, washed and dried powdered, moulded, and heated to at least 550 DEG C. and preferably 850 DEG C. under conditions to prevent intervescence and oxidation.
